With cold satisfaction, Cameron explained, “Let’s just say Sharon’s memory of certain events has been altered. She needed a little push to let go of the past, and now we’re on the same side.”

Sharon’s brow furrowed, as if trying to remember something. Nick pleaded with her, “Sharon, you don’t have to be with him. He’s manipulating you! This is Cameron—the man who nearly destroyed your life. Don’t you remember?”

But Sharon shook her head slowly. “Nick, stop. Cameron isn’t the enemy. He’s been protecting me.”

Nick felt his grip on reality slipping. “Protecting you from what? This man is a murderer!”

At the word “murderer,” Cameron’s smile faltered, but only for a moment. “Nick, I’m not the bad guy here. I’m the only one keeping Sharon out of prison.”

“What are you talking about?” Nick asked, confusion and dread mixing in his voice. Then Cameron dropped the bombshell: “Heather Stevens. Sharon and I killed her together.”

But Cameron stepped forward, closing the gap between them. “Oh, but we did. It started as an accident. Things got out of hand. Heather got in the way, and we had to get rid of her. It was the only way to protect Sharon.”

Sharon’s eyes widened as the truth began to creep back into her mind. She looked at Cameron, then at Nick, panic rising. “Nick… I… I didn’t mean to.”
