The Young and the Restless

Real Reason Jess Walton’s Jill Isn’t On ‘Young And The Restless’

There was a time when Jill Abbott was in practically every storyline on The Young And The Restless. Why isn’t the character played by Jess Walton on much?

Who Is Jill Abbott?

If you turned on The Young And The Restless in the 1980s and 1990s, you were likely to see Jill Abbott front and center on your television screens. The character first appeared in Genoa City in 1973, played by Brenda Dickson until 1980. The role was recast with Deborah Adair, who played Jill off and on until 1986.

However, the character didn’t really flourish until actress Jess Walton took over the role in 1987. Most soap characters are known for their romantic entanglements.

But Jill’s main storylines involved her ongoing feud with Katherine Chancellor. Jeanne Cooper originated the role of Katherine in 1973 and played the character until the actress died in 2013.

Jill Abbott and Katherine Chancellor went from enemies to frenemies over the years. But Jill hasn’t been seen in a while, making fans wonder what’s going on.

Jess Walton was rumored to have walked off the show in 2009 amid contract negotiations. The show reportedly wanted to reduce her pay, but the two sides eventually came to an agreement that kept her on the soap.

The character has been battling an illness off-screen lately, causing fans to wonder if Jess Walton is done with the show.

Real Reason Jess Walton Isn’t On Young And The Restless Often

Jill Abbott does pop into town occasionally, though it’s usually virtually through video chat. Jess Walton did make an in-person appearance in 2023 when Jill went head-to-head with Mamie (Veronica Redd) over the Chancellor-Winters company stakes.

Young And The Restless fans will be happy to know that Jess Walton is happy and healthy. She reunited with some of her co-stars for the show’s 50th anniversary.

She dropped to recurring status on the CBS soap in 2012. According to Monsters & Critics, the actress is retired and lives in Oregon. That explains why Jill mainly only appears on video. But the actress does make an occassional special appearance in person on the daytime sudser.

June marks 37 years since the actress made her Y&R debut as Jill Foster Abbott. It’s unlikely that she will come out of retirement and rejoin the CBS soap full-time. However, fans greatly prefer occasional Jill appearances over recasting or killing off the character.
